What Are Lithium Batteries?
Lithium batteries are rechargeable batteries that have become popular for camping enthusiasts in Australia. These batteries are known for their lightweight and compact design, making them ideal for mobile setups.
What are the benefits of a lithium battery?
Much Lighter and Compact
One of the standout features of lithium batteries is their lightweight and compact nature. This makes them perfect for camper vans where space is limited, allowing you to pack more without sacrificing power.
Far Higher Discharge Ratings
Lithium batteries boast higher discharge ratings compared to traditional batteries. This means you can draw more power from them without causing damage, making them efficient for running various appliances in your camper van.
Much Longer Lifespans
Investing in a lithium battery is a wise choice for the long haul. These batteries have significantly longer lifespans compared to other alternatives, ensuring they last through many camping trips.
What to Look for When Buying a Lithium Battery?
When selecting the best lithium battery for your camper van, there are several key factors to consider.
Usable Capacity
The usable capacity of a battery determines how much power you can actually use. Understanding your energy needs will help you choose a battery with the right capacity for your camping adventures.
Weight
Remember that the battery’s weight can impact your overall load. Lithium batteries are known for being lightweight, providing power without weighing you down.
Type of Cells
Different lithium batteries use various cell types. Understanding these differences can help you choose a battery that aligns with your specific requirements.
Maximum Discharge Current
The maximum discharge current is crucial for powering high-demand appliances. Make sure the battery you choose can handle the maximum current required for your devices.
Maximum Charge Current
Similarly, the maximum charge current influences how quickly your battery can recharge. Consider this factor based on your camping setup and available charging options.
Number of Cycles
The number of cycles refers to how many charge and discharge cycles a battery can undergo before its performance starts to degrade. Opt for a battery with a high cycle count for longevity.
Warranty Information
Check the warranty information provided by the manufacturer. A solid warranty ensures that you’re covered in case of any issues with the battery.
Lithium Battery Sizes
Lithium batteries come in various sizes to suit different needs. Assess your power requirements and available space to choose the right size for your camper van.
What Do We Run?
We are currently running with 2 x Itechworld 240X pro batteries. We have been using these batteries for the last year. We run them with a 3000 watt Victron inverter with no issues. We have previously had 2 x 200 Amp solar king batteries. Great batteries, however, their max discharge rate was not enough to run the inverter at max capacity.
Do You Need Lithium Batteries?
Consider your camping style and energy needs to determine if lithium batteries are the right fit for you. Evaluate the benefits and weigh them against your preferences.
